Stereotype defined

Stereotypes are mental short cuts that can be useful psychologically but harmful. The dangerous thing is that once he have these short cuts, information that fit our stereotypes make us feel more right in our narrow thinking and information that is counter to our stereotype gets thrown out as an anomaly. They become self fulfilling stereotypes and are hard to shift. We miss important information that could expand our thinking, because we are stuck in stereotypes.

There are stereotypes of omission-- where we make groups invisible and create stories about them in their absence. And there are stereotypes of distortion where we create caricatures of groups.

There is no such thing as a "good stereotype." Any stereotype that narrows the humanity of someone is harmful.

There is a little error in this video. In the minute 00:50 it is shown a WW1 poster about the german ocuppation while the woman talks about racial stereotypes about black people. I know she doesn´t says it explicitly, but it could be unsderstand that this first image is reffering to black people and not germans.

You defined stereotypes reasonably well but they can be good too. Often stereotypes have some truth to them and they act as a quick first reaction. Often they act to protect us. If you see someone who looks dangerous, they fit a stereotype of someone who could be dangerous, you approach with caution. If you see someone who is of a different culture you use the stereotype to respond to them in a way that references their cultural needs. (ex. In Asian culture passing items with two hands is seen as polite, not doing this is seen as rude.) So you made a false stereotype about stereotypes to suggest they are harmful.

Stereotypes are the result of reality and ststistics. Get over it.
