In Hindu mythology, this polar light is called 'Usha', the goddess of dawn. And the Roman term of this light is AURORA. So, i think these scientific terms(aurora australis and aurora borealis) are named after this goddess aurora...

Thanks MAM for giving us such a good knowledge about THE INTERESTING TOPIC "AURORA" i think aurora can also be seen in the planets which are near sun, but there will not the GREEN LIGHT as only EARTH have oxygen But is nitrogen if present on other planets then its possible to see blue AURORA on other planets
