Bruce Dern's character is by far the most interesting part of the movie but Robert Shaw has a pretty good turn about halfway through also.

I remember having seen this film solely because of this trailer: at the time I didn't have a clue of the political and ideological background, implications or underpinnings, I just thought it looked as a gripping action flic, and the rest of the audience at that occasion shared a whiff of surprised awe mixed with nervous stifled chuckles at the end.
