My very expensive lawnmower purchase. It cost more than my last 3 push mowers combined. So far I am not impressed :-(

I have a 3.5 hp briggs and straton I bought at Walmart back in 2006. It is still running like a champ. I have never changed the oil or the spark plug. It just runs. I put gas in it thats all.

Old video, but I have had the JS46 model since 2011 and have not had any problems. Has been a great mower.

push mowers (all brands) are notorious for blasting the flywheel key loose. It is a safety feature built in to keep the engine from self destructing from running out of ignition time. It generally happens when mower blade encounters a solid object or from not having the flywheel nut, recoil clutch, not tightened enough allowing a wobble. usually a simple fix. if you observed the blade rotating with no resistance when you pulled the starter cord it is a bent motor.

I agree. Just moved, so I don't know where the nearest pawn shop is. But that will be my next route.

A problem with the engine shouldn't be a reflection on John Deere. The engine is all Briggs and Stratton. The wiring harness that was hanging loose is supposed to be like that until the customer unpacks the mower and plugs the two ends together. Both the "Quick Start Guide" and the owner's manual discuss plugging that in. It's shipped that way so that there can be no possible drain on the battery. Any battery drain would cause the battery to go bad while being stored for a long period of time.

I have had this mower for 4 years. No problems. Runs perfect and cuts everything in its path. My battery went bad last year, but it's easy to pull start, so I haven't worried about it.

I bought my JD JS-48 at Lowes 5 years ago. I have had zero issues in all that time. Mow-Mentum means it pulls at the speed you walk. I walk slow, it pulls slow. Great idea. I have found the torque fantastic. It will mow through heavy grass with ease. The grass bagger is great. No problems there either. I have read some complaints where the crankshaft has bent after running over something heavy. Well duh! I walk my yard often to clear any debris and I don’t run it over tree roots. The battery doesn’t hold a charge very long, but it starts on the first pull anyway.

Mine John Deer is super old and runs great. All I can say is shit happens. By the way you have a beautiful lawn.

you appear to have enough ground. If you get the bagger attachment and start composting grass and leaf clippings, you could start an incredible garden. simple process if you dont want to manage a hot compost pile. build a box the size of a pallet and 4 feet high, layer the clippings with a shallow layer of dirt and throw in some containers full of fishing worms from the big box store with the big blue W. vermicular composting.

I'm in Australia and bought one of these about 5 years ago, Based on their name I thought ti would be a great mower. WAS I WRONG. From the word go there was a very fine oil leak towards the bottom of the mower. 6 months old the battery wouldn't hold charge, Replaced un der warranty at first service. Dealer disregarded the oil leak, 6 months later battery shit itself again. Had enough of this supposedly brilliant battery start. Then it started blowing smoke on start up and the bearing in the drive wheel started to scrape. Took the wheel off and greased it and it went away for a while. About 6 months later the noise came back, The problem is that they bearing and drive gear in the wheel isn't well enough enclosed to stop grass and dirt getting in there. Regularly serviced and the motor still blows smoke.Don't know what Briggs & Stratton have done to their motors but never had old ones that blew smoke. Common problems with these mowers reported from numerous Australian owners. The only way to fix the battery start is to put in a Lithium battery. They also have major problems of bending cranks because of that stupid one piece blade, and once that happens it's stuffed. NEVER AGAIN. An overrated piece of junk relying on a company name rather than being a quality unit.

I've had mine for 4 years and  it is awesome!!  Not a single problem.  make sure you change the oil and filter after break in! I got ie because of the oil filter, it will help it run longer by filtering the oil. I change my oil an filter every spring

Do you know where you got the second one from?

Yes I understand the Deere contracts with B&S, and that it is not necessarily Deere's fault. Yes, I suspected that there was probably a blown gasket which I said at 1:18. Yes I know the wire is for the starter, but when I called their help line, they told me that there was a service bulletin about the wire which doesn't make sense to me, but you never know. Not sure whay you mean about the "not a 2 strokes don't have valves also" I know it's a 4-stroke, and 4-stroke engines do have valves.

She does a pretty good job cutting the grass. The lines are not even though. Briggs all the way brother its all they build. Its all they build. Its all they build. I have had Go-carts powered by their engines. If I want a tractor I will get a John Deer. Good luck.

Do they still have John Deere JS48 in Pittsburgh

I realize this is an old video and I’m not sure if you still have this mower, but could you do another video on how the battery hook ups work?

You can't beat a Brigs and Straton lawnmower. Mine cost 100 bucks new. It has paid for itself a few times over. Now if I can get my woman to mow the grass.

I just ordered the Troy Bilt TB370xp which has this same engine but which has front casters so no lifting needed to steer.  With decompression easy start engines no electric start is needed unless you're disabled.  This engine is the most powerful engine 190cc highest torque available on a 21-22" mower and is basically a commercial engine.  The oversized air cleaner is welcomed.  That said it is elsewhere on the mowers that contain this engine that they cut corners so compromises must be made as there is no perfect mower these days qualitatively especially.  I will do a review on mine when it arrives. Thanks for the post Saltyshellback.

So far so good. Have not heard back from John Deere on why the first one crapped out. gyoldamnshit says it may be a stuck valve, but it doesn't matter now. Just hope it doesn't happen again.
