12 Versions of 'I Put a Spell on You' Medley– Vintage Halloween

Twelve versions of a very influential rock song and one of my favorite Halloween jams – "I Put a Spell on You". Jay Hawkins originally wrote it as a love ballad about a girlfriend who had dumbed him. The studio liked the song but didn't think a ballad would sell so the producer got the band drunk before the recording and this wild version was the result. It is such a timeless classic of heartbreak and desperate love and it has been interpreted in many styles by many artists since it was first released in 1956. One of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll and number 313 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

Screaming Jay Hawkins - its over the top, almost theatrical. Once you've listened to it a few times the other versions seem just so tame. It's also the the way that sax harmonises with the keyboards.

Screaming Jay Hawkins original is a work of sheer genius in all its voodoo slapstick glory. And Nina Simone's version is haunting an beautiful. But CCR's version is by far the most intense and dark and hypnotizing and powerful and will always be my favorite.

I saw Screaming Jay performing this, he had a flash bomb, in his hand! Health and safety would never allow that these days... There's never been another version of this for me since then. I tried to do his version at a jam once and I passed out in the big finish. Never going to try that again. Screaming Jay, this one's yours!

Definitely some good renditions, I have to say Tim Curry has a special place in my heart, I also really love The Screamin' Jay, Nina Simone, CCR, and Bette Middler versions! What a great song;

Creedence Clearwater revival is hands down the best. it sounds passionate and romantic at the same time and also catches the vibes of that 60s music. absolutely love it

I wish Angela Jordans version was on this list. Omg. Her version of this are amazing. And she was 8-10 years old when recording it.

Wow... I never knew so many people sung the song. I knew only of Nina Simon in 1965 but I never knew the original person of 1956 Screaming Jay Hawkins. That was amazing!

No wonder it’s my favorite song! No matter who sings it and how, it’s still a masterpiece 💕

I can't decide which one is better because each one sounds different! Definitely one of the best songs ever written, the greatest proof is that dozens of famous artists from many different music backgrounds have covered it, and each new version adds value to this legend song....

Marilyn Manson always makes something very special out of his covers, I really like this. But the best version for me was Creedence Clearwater Revivals’ version but the Sonique one wasn’t bad either, somehow I liked it.
