I am a white woman, but I’ve dealt with a racist on behalf of a CHILD. I was teaching pre-k and one of the parents (who was the principal of the city’s high school by the way) had twin daughters who were biracial (Arabic and white). Mom was notified that a case of lice had been reported within the facility. She immediately POINTS HER FINGER at one of my students; a FOUR YEAR OLD black princess, and says, “well, if those dirty, nappy headed kids weren’t here this wouldn’t be an issue.” Ma’am! MA’AM! WHAT?! First of all, your kids are biracial! WHAT?! Second of all, the chances of a black girl getting lice, let alone giving it to the class, are slim to none considering the amount of oil and product that is in their hair (usually). The lice can’t even stick. I ended up losing my job there because I raised my voice and told her that racism wasn’t welcome in my classroom and that she had no business working in a school. I was shocked that I was let go. But, if the center didn’t back me up on that…. I don’t want to work there anyway. 🤷🏻‍♀️ It’s just sad because this shit really does happen to POC. It’s so disheartening. I wish I could make a difference but I’m just one person. A white person at that. I understand that I’ll never understand, but I’ll always stand up for what’s right. Period.
