The hairy frogfish is a marine fish belonging to the family anglerfish. These species lives in shallow, sandy zones or deep water in rocky and coral reefs. They can grow up to 22 cm in length with a round, expandable body, covered with dermal spinules resembling hairs. They have a "rod" which is their first dorsal spine with a worm-like "lure" or esca on its tip, which they wave in front of potential prey to attract their attention.

Frogfishes are poor swimmers, preferring to lie on the sea floor and wait for prey to approach. Once the prey is spotted, they can approach slowly using their pectoral and pelvic fins to walk along the floor. They are carnivorous that mainly feeding on small marine fishes and crustaceans.
