I remember a story of some dude from a kamekaze squad who noped out and flew back to base. They court marshaled him, or whatever the Japanese equivalent was. Seems like they didn’t have much of a choice.

Happened to Italian fighter pilot Giorgio Graffer which was damaged when attacking a British night bomber. He said “I reckoned I had to complete my mission by shooting down that plane with my plane, so I shot down that plane with my plane”. Long story short, after being hit he rammed a Whitley with a CR42 biplane. He survived because he jumped out the plane right before the impact.

Kamikaze means divine wind, and is a reference to a massive storm that destroyed a Mongol fleet that set sail to invade Japan. Unfortunately for Japan, the American fleet was backed by the greatest industrial capacity in the world.
