In this video, I will show you 5 common mistakes that will cause you to fail as a music producer. These are mistakes that most people make at some point, and if you don't break these bad habits early on, they will hold you back and prevent you from reaching your true potential as a music producer.
The thing is: If you want to be a successful music producer you need to finish tracks consistently. In order to finish songs, you need to develop a fast and effective workflow. That's the key to finishing tracks, so In this video, I will show you the most common mistakes musicians and music producers make that tend to hold back their development.
I'm sure many will find many of these examples familiar. Spending too much time tweaking a snare for example, or fiddling with automation, tweaking and mixing your music early on, before you even have the main melodic elements in place.
The advice given here is general workflow tips that will apply to any DAW out there. It doesn't matter if you use FL Studio, Ableton, Cubase, Studio One, or whatever. This applies to all music producers and beatmakers.
So, the next time you open FL Studio, Ableton or whatever, then keep these tips in mind. Get your melodic ideas down quickly, then focus on getting a general arrangement in place. That way you can see that your song is starting to take shape. You can then fill in the missing pieces more easily. Then, when you have the most important elements in place, you can start focusing more on mixing and mastering.
Getting fixated on mixing early on, tweaking a single element too much, or just sitting there listening to that same 8-bar loop over and over again is one of the most common mistakes people make, and is also the main reason why you're not finishing your songs.

Some of my tracks i've created, a year ago and then left it for many months. And then came back to them and my skills are much better. It is worth to work on tune as long as you needed. I don't believe that fast workflow makes track better. If you know what effect you want to obtain then it is worth to work on it as long as you have a goal.

We've all had those track we love and play to death and end up hating them. Lots of great advice Firewalk, thanks!

I was smiling when I watched this cause I recognized myself a lot and what mistakes I did in the beginning and some that I still do. Great information and 100% right!

My tip (or advice I guess) for new producers -

Your first productions are 100% going to be... absolutely rubbish. You'll think they are great and going to be signed by big labels... then you'll look back in a few years and cringe at how bad they are and how far you've come. Quality only comes with experience, and that is something you cannot buy or shortcut. Just keep finishing projects, keep learning, keep improving.

I’m so guilty of number one. I’ll create a half finished song with a melody I love and I’ll spend way WAY too much time listening to it to the point where I start forgetting what I was trying to make in the first place and I end up taking weeks, if not months to finish or not finish it all. It’s a really bad habit I’m struggling to break!

Wow the title of this video is really motivating. If u make music for fun then you will never fail, if you dp it fpr competition then it’s not gonna be a good time.

Let me know what bad habit you struggle with the most. Did you find any of these examples familiar?
Note: This is an updated video based on an older one, with more information added. I believe that this information is so important that people need to be made aware of this. I've been giving feedback on music, and helping people improve their skills for many years, and these 5 mistakes are the most common issues I see people struggle with over and over again. Especially the one where you create an 8-bar loop, and then you just sit there and listen to it over and over, letting your mind wander, imagining you're on a stage with a huge crowd. Then, after a while, you just don't "feel" it anymore, and you scrap it and start on something else instead... I bet this has happened to most of you.. Am I wrong?.. ;)

One of my mistakes: don't overload your cpu! I know it's easy to get carried away with layering but you need to listen to what you're doing. Look for cpu optimizations and consolidate cpu-expensive tracks, and keep it simple

I always start with a sample/chords, then lead, then perc, clap/snare, kick, bass. That same workflow every time helps me get tracks done really fast

Instead of listening to the song over and over, turn off the computer for a while and try to listen to it in your head, imagine what you want it to sound like and try to translate that into the daw later. Write and produce in your head first

This gave me hope, cos the only rule i kinda break here is listening on repeat. When i feel i am good enough, i will start uploading on youtube again

What an inspirational video. I can relate to all 5 reasons.
I get annoyed with my productions very, very quickly even though I know that they are good. I listen to the best bit on repeat for ages. Especially when stoned! Lesson learnt!! Brilliant video - Thank you DUDE 🤟

Cannot emphasise enough about ear fatigue, I've spent hours and hours mixing things in one session and then come back to it a few days later and cannot believe my ears on how bad it all sounds and everything that's wrong with it.

Now I don't mix for any longer than a few hours at a time and then before the final mix I usually wait a couple of weeks.

Projects I'm not sure about I go back to a year or so later and I find I'm more equipped and more knowledgable and I'm actually able to get a much better result.

This video is soo accurate and is something I wish I'd seen 10 years ago.
Thank you!

I struggle with motivation to complete the track because I'll not think it's good enough, tweak, tweak and tweak then I eventually end up not finishing it xD

Another under rated skill is file management and project/sample organization. It might take a couple hours but if you can build some good templates and setup a good system it will save you days in the long run and can save you from having a headache of problems! I normally like to setup new templates with new or different plug ins every few months just to keep things fresh.

I 100% agree with this advice! One thing that really helped me grow out of this was doing the organizing and setup separate, like making templates and drumkits and just getting everything the way I want it. Then when I go into creative mode everything is there for me to create and I don't get stuck flipping thru samples and plug ins for an hour! It let's me stay in the flow.
Just like anybody else I can def be a tweaker sometimes but now a days I try to pick my battles wiser!
I also break the process into phases.
1. setup
2. Create
(Music and/or vocals)
3. Rough mix
4. Bounce
5. Remix
Or sometimes I will do this then do the vocals about the same way after the track is done.

This was a good genuine 5 producer mistakes. Sometimes I still struggle with these yes. I always release a track once I'm finished. I gotta stop man. I think my best advice is stop listening to people saying "it must be done this way." When no, there's only tips and tricks you can give out, everybody is different. I used to meet people on discord who make beats when I am making symphonic metal and they tell me what to do, more equalizers, more compression, your arrangement sucks, and I always ask, you know how to mix a full symphony orchestra top to bottom? "No" that's right. This is the best I can do, no one really knows how to mix symphonic metal yet. Sometimes just gotta trust your instincts. All music is different and great.
