Doctor Strange has died thousands of times at the hands of Dormammu, and he remembers these deaths. The inflections and tones in his dialogue with Dormammu change from commanding to playful, which implies that he has died many times. That's he mastered many spells! Lol

When I was a kid back in the 1970s my brother let me read his Marvel Comics collection. Dr. Strange quickly became one of my favorite titles. Born in the trippy, psychedelic days of the 1960s and 70s, it was a reflection of its time. I thought the movie did a wonderful job recreating the feel of the comic and it is one of my favorites in the MCU.
