My dad was radio man on a P2V from 1950 to 1953. Squadron VP-4. Their callsign was Elk Lodge. He nearly fell out that hatch in the belly. He was walking back to the radio man position, and the hatch gave way under his feet. He was hanging out of the belly of the plane, thousands of feet over the ocean. He screamed for help, but there was no way the pilot or co-pilot could hear him over the noise. He said "Thank God I was in the best physical condition of my life. I don't know how I did it, but I managed to pull myself back in." He's 87 now, and still has nightmares about it to this day.

You could sleep over rear hatch which opened up to the inside of the AC. I still have flash backs about falling out

My grandfather died in 1962 in a crash involving the P2. It was during a training exercise.
