ʁ vs ʀ

N.B. later review has shown me that the fricative is off in pronunciation: what I did was half-trilled, and should be much softer. Apart from that, should be all in order.

Basic look at differences between /ʁ/ vs /ʀ/, two sounds I've seen often confused in language and conlang circles.

both of those are trills, you can clearly hear the alternating sound of a trill with both but one was more forceful than the other. what you did was a fricative trill and a non-fricative trill, pure uvular fricatives exist and do no sound like that.
source: I am a phonology student that natively speaks a dialect of Arabic where /ʁ/ is very rarely trilled.

I can hear the difference but can't say the difference

The uvular trill is very useful for imitating any of the other trills. If you can't roll your Rs then make the post alveolar approximate and the uvular trill at the same time. It doesn't sound exactly the same though.

For me it's the German 'R' vs. the Russian 'R'.
A neverending battle.

for me its one or the other, if i figure out how to say /ʁ/ i cant say /ʀ/, if i figure out how to say /ʀ/ i cant say /ʁ/

What would really help is a diagram of the tongue. I don't immediately get the difference between uvelar velar and post-velar. But I do immediately see the difference if you show me a tongue diagram.

this is just wrong, lol
you're doing a uvular fircative-trill [ʀ̝] for the first one, and a uvular trill for the second [ʀ]

how tf did you pronounce a uvular trill?? i thought they were impossible(also kinda sounds like a regular [r]) we need you to be strapped to an MRI machine and look at your tongue movements
