Residents across the north of New Zealand are bracing for a rough night as Cyclone Gabrielle lashes the country with torrential rains and winds.

At least 46,000 homes have lost power in the storm, while hundreds of flights have been cancelled.

A state of emergency has been declared in nine regions - affecting nearly a third of the 5.1 million population.

I'm sorry to hear about the impact of Cyclone Gabrielle on New Zealand. It's always concerning when natural disasters disrupt communities and cause damage to property and infrastructure. I hope everyone is staying safe and that the authorities are able to respond effectively to the situation. If there's anything I can assist with, please let me know.

I live in Kerikeri Northland and for the first time since Saturday there is no wind. Power was out in my area for a day and a half and the torrential rain and wind was terrible. The East coast is cut off now and flooding in that area is very bad - even up here there are issues with access due to slips and trees down. Ironically there is no service on my mob today and the sun has actually come national state of emergency was declared so central govt. can assist local councils.

Plenty of companies making their workers come in. That in itself is news worthy.

God had mercy on us and calmed the storm. It wasn't as bad as it could've been🙏 Thank you Lord 💓

This report is absolutely pathetic. The cyclone is catastrophic and you talk about the shops. Much of our infrastructure is destroyed, people are still being rescued, many are homeless, whole areas have been cut off and have no communication. Auckland was flooded not enduring heavy rainfall two weeks before this Cyclone. New Zealand is the first to always give whatever we can to help others, no-one has held out their hand to us 🇳🇿🇳🇿🇳🇿🇳🇿

Sorry to hear of this. Hope the US is able to help. We need to help each other out in these nasty natural disasters. Climate change is real, not going away. If I could wave a magic wand to send help to New Zealand, I would.

When my Papa Tuta Nihoniho said, if we can't have it back, let it all fall into the sea.
