I was stationed in the UK in 94-95 and was amazed how dope bbc was. Reading these comments I feel I met all of you.

Way back in 99' I rode the yellow bus with a girl who had Portishead written on her messenger bag with a sharpie. I asked her what it was she said "It's a band, you wouldn't like it." Naturally I went straight to the mall after school. Threw on a pair of those grimy listen-before-you-buy headphones in the old record store and was blown away by the sweet and strange sounds filling my ear holes. I immediately bought the CD and ran home to my stereo. Over 20 years later she is still wrong and I'm still rocking these beats! I don't remember your name but thanks for the intro, this one's for you.

Remember staying up to 2am to tape this live on BBC Radio 1! 94 and 95 were the best years for the Essential Mix :)

Greatest Essential Mix ever. I listened to it go out on Radio 1 at the time, I've still got the cassette tape somewhere. Lost count of how many times I've played this over the years, I know every second of it

1995 was a great year in UK. Long hot summer, great music and cheap beer! I was YR12 at school in Pill, next to Portishead. Back then Oasis & Blur were fighting it out who was the best. Down in Bristol no one gave a fk. We had Portishead, Massive Attack & Roni Size!
I go back to Bristol every now and then. I drink in Weatherspoons next to a heater and listen to iPod when i do. Sometimes if my mind allows me to i think back to then and how good it was. The 90's were awesome!! 2pound 20 a pint, smoke in pub, say what you like, no mobiles or Internet ... and the Music had soul.
I reckon those times will come back. They have to.

I remember hearing this live at the time. As an old skool (former) scratch DJ, this track list is almost perfect for me. ❤ I love that Andy dropped the rpm from 45 to 33 just for the amen break in the Winston's track 44:18, just to underline it, then to go into the Space 1999 theme, just takes me back to being a kid.

I remember being so stoned in my teens that I didn't even notice I'd been listening to the same 5 second loop over and over for up to 4 minutes. Good times.

This is the longest anyone has ever driven in Brampton without getting in an accident.

1995 was such an insanely good year to be going to clubs. This mix is a lot of the beat and instrumental tracks I used to hear on the dancefloor, but didn't know the name of. Years later it became very easy with Google searches, YouTube and Wikipedia to know them all...Streets of San Francisco theme in the same mix with Gang Starr, Showbiz & AG and Craig Mac. Tracks from the 60s to current. I loved this period. It was right before a lot of classic electronica albums would be released and take over the dancefloor for the next few years.

I may have commented this already somewhere amongst the 800+ comments under one of my old accounts, but this takes me back to the night it was aired on BBC Radio 1 in 1995. I was round my girlfriend's late that night but rushed home to get it recorded, listening on my radio as I ran. My mother though, had assumed I wasn't returning that night and had double-locked the front door, so I couldn't get in with my key alone. I had to go round to the back garden and chuck the gravel up at her bedroom window to wake her up and let me in before I could dash to the stash of blank tapes & get the stereo recording. I missed the first half hour (beyond hearing it) but had a banging 90 minutes on a single C90. I had to wait 'til the YouTube era a full decade laer to hear that first half hour again. I see this night time driving upload is six years old now and is maybe a reupload as I'm sure I've played it with the visuals much longer ago than that. Thanks though and thanks to the person that did the tracklist in the comments too: needs pinning...📌

This is a near Perfect Mix.
In 1995 I was hard into smoking Hashish here in the capital of Iceland and this was my music, for sure. So many songs and sounds I just loved. It's like having a near satisfaction experience, , , it tickles me all over my body. Just perfect sound and the Trip Hop scene with Portishead, Massive Attack and others took this Era by the storm. Just love this collection and mix. Any song on this has this bass and feel that some of Portishead songs on Dummy got. Well done !

Love it ❤ Thanks. I've never heard the last 26 minute of this mix before... my friend only had a C90 cassette to record it on (go ask your dad)
