Archaeologists working in Pompeii have unearthed a series of rare, almost life-size paintings known as frescoes.

The paintings depict Dionysus - the god of wine-making - and the dig has also uncovered 50 rooms in the ancient Roman city.

Pompeii was buried in an eruption from Mount Vesuvius in AD79.

It is amazing that the wall/paintings / paint did not disintegrate with this heat. What a beautiful find and colors are still good.

Back in the early 1980s, we studied Latin at school and as so many foreign language textbooks, the lessons were centred around the lives of a family. In the Latin class, this was an actual family that lived in Pompeii, the father of which was called Caecilius. Our school had a school trip to italy to see the Roman remains and learn more about them. There was also an excursion to Pompeii. I was very fortunate to have gone on that trip, my first ever abroad. First ever for anyone in my family for that matter. I will never forget visiting the home of Caecilius, but for some reason it was the Roman road with its equivalent of a zebra crossing (stepping stones in the road adhering to Roman regulations of allowing chariot, cart and carriage wheels to pass) that stuck in my mind. Such an advanced civilisation and I would love to go there again.

Those walls look amazing, with the bright red color and the beautiful frescoes. I can only imagine how it must have looked in its prime.

I've always wondered why news like this doesn't appeal to the masses. This is a groundbreaking discovery—it's the story of humanity itself. Yet, if the news were about Taylor Swift, everyone would lose their minds.

The newly discovered room in Pompeii, filled with remarkably well-preserved paintings, offers an incredible glimpse into the past. The level of detail and preservation is astonishing, almost as if time itself had stood still. Archaeologists believe the artwork may provide new insights into daily life, mythology, or even previously unknown aspects of Roman culture.

I first read about Pompeii in elementary school in an article in "My Weekly Reader" (back in the '60's). There was a picture of a plaster cast of a victim. The whole article was riveting, and I have been interested in it ever since.

What I think is cool is that with the background colors and the hints of motion in the images, if you remember that as a dark room lit by fire, the walls would appear like mini-movies.

IMO...the most significant painting in the painting of a chicken in a 2, 000 year old fast food restaurant in Pompeii.
Chicken were domesticated in Thailand about 10, 000 years ago. by trade they moved to India....Egypt...the middle east....and Italy in about 200 the Roman Empire they moved to western Europe.
So. a near flightless Chicken from Thailand is painted in a fast food shop in Pompeii 2, 000 years ago.

The friezes/frescoes are beautiful, but it’s especially interesting to see those columns with original paint still on them.

Millossevick : i was in Pompeii with my mother in 2013 or 2014 in the summer, and, at some point, mother fell on to the ground, and, i was, standing, amazed, unable to move, amazed by the incident, so, unknown people, ran, towards mother, to pick her UP, 😮

With its fluted temple-like columns and painted wall scenes of the gods, that dining area inverts the natural order. Humans looking out of the temple-like area upon the Bacchic revels!
