Well th Boss DS1 in my opinion is
I have been using DS1's for 41
Now I use mine (I have loads of them, but who doesn't ?!!!!) with old mk 2 Marshall superlead heads (my fave are 50 watt heads but the 100 watters are cool too & none of mine are reissues!!!) set so they're clipping (you know singing with the volume on 7 (2ND channel top input which is warmer!!) & the EQ Bass noon Mid 1 O'Clock Treble 11 O'CLock & presence 9 O'Clock!!!
The ds1 really cuts through the flabby bottom & makes the tone sing!!!
I use loads of guitars, but my no1 choice are my stash of 1980's Charvel Strat's with 1X EMG 89 & a full fat German made Floyd Rose (I love Gary Moore!!) but in my setup everything works!!!
I'm a session musician so I play all styles!!!!

Tone over 75%, dist closed and level little over unity on a lightly break up amp. try it first, thank me latter

Lovely tone, but your playing takes after Malmsteen way more than Vai.

idk why but when I use ds1 and my marshall, if the amp has above 3/10 gain, the neck pickup gets really muddy while the bridge doesn't. Do you know why? (the guitar is not broken I'm sure)
