Is THIS the END of the Mac Studio?

Recent reports state that Apple might be moving away from the Mac Studio and focusing on the Mac Pro. Is this true? And if so, what does it say about the short life span of the Mac Studio? Does Apple consider it a failed experiment?

Funny to watch this now as the M2 Studio has come out. God there is a lot of speculation regarding Apple.

Apple should stick with the Studio. Apple silicon (SOC) is not an upgradeable solution so makes the concept of a modular desktop solution redundant

That's fine. The prices will drop 2nd hand, but it's value will still live on.

I wish they release latest studio. Honestly Mac Pro is way too expensive for me.

What’s your thought on Mac mini M2 pro for 4K video editing? While I don’t care much about the time it would take to export the video, my concern is around the experience while editing the video. Does it have good performance during video editing.

Please let me know your thoughts about it.

I have a fully loaded Mini M2 Pro and a Studio M1 Max. The only reason to buy the Mini with specifications equivalent to a Studio is if you absolutely need a smaller box, which I did for field gigs. It's a shame folks are so obsessively enamoured with the Mini, when they would save themselves a lot of valuable time over time getting a Studio for about the same money. As soon as you start opting for the 32GB Mini M2 Pro, you should really start looking at the Studio M1 Max! Nonetheless, I do enjoy seeing the rationalizations folks come up with to morph reality around the math.

makes no sense. The Mac Pro was made to be fully upgradable sliding in and out GPU's ssd's and ram easy quick access to the eternal parts where as the Mac Studio everything is soldered in like the iPhone or iPad. Why would they even make the Mac Pro when we all know you won't be able to upgrade anything inside of it unless you already pay before hand. Not too many people have 7k for starters so I have no idea why they would make this move. The reason has to be to scare people into buying up the m1 studios increase sales.

I do music, replaced my 5, 1 mac pro with a studio max w/ 32g ram and 1tb. Perfect replacement. If I waited another year would I get a m2 pro mini? Probably not. Price is higher on the mini and cooling is better on the studio. Oh... I don't have fan noise like others have complained about.

having just put my order today in for a fully upgraded m2 mini pro to replace my workhorse imac i7 ... that was a good video to watch! i was on the fence about a studio but having researched it it just seemed that apple were throwing all their impressive weight behind the mini ...
fingers crossed for longevity - but i am sure i will be blown away by the new machine
thanks

Thanks for the video! I actually just purchased an M1 Max Studio as it seems the M2 won't be coming. Even if it does, I'm not a huge fan of the ssd's Apple is using in the new Macs from this year. I've been curious though what will happen specifically with the Max chips. It seems unlikely that Apple will release a Mac pro with a Max since it's supposed to be the top of the line. This leaves no desktop with the M2 Max. Any thoughts?

I'm a motion graphics artist who mostly works with After Effects in the market for a new machine. I was first thinking of the Mac Studio, but the Mac Mini M2 Pro with 32gb seems like the cheaper (and sometimes faster) option...

One of the biggest reasons many businesses purchased Mac pros was the easily swappable multi drive bay. The simplest way to allow the two machines to exist simultaneously would be to allow the pro continue to have swappable multi drive bay and the studio remain unchangeable post purchase. That way smaller creative types who could utilize the extra performance base storage and external storage expansion could still get the studio and the big companies that are actually the main purchasers of Mac Pros would gladly pay the higher price point for the functionality

Just bought the M2 Max Mac Studio :) But I do feel bad for those that spent HUGE money on the 2019 Mac Pro...

I love the studio. I think sales were just bad because it got released at the wrong time. When the M1 Max MacBook Pros dropped everybody rushed out to buy one including myself. No point in buying the studio when you just got a new MacBook. If they release a Studio this march with M2 chips I’m totally buying one.

Ironically, the first time I saw one of your videos I had recently ordered my Mac Studio in Ultra config (didn’t yet have it at the time) and gulped a bit coz I thought I bought myself a “bit too much computer” and I had thought the same thing when buying my 2015 27” iMac years earlier which the Studio ultimately replaced. I am more than sympathetic to your speculation here that the Studio may get “left behind” with the new Mac Pro on its way. Though the Mac Studio, particularly in Ultra config, certainly isn’t cheap it increasingly strikes me as the “poor man’s Mac Pro”.

atleast they wont take the preset mac studio off the line up

There is much speculation in this video. Studio could be M2 Ultra, Pro could be Dual M2 Ultra or M2 Ultra with M2 GPU expansion slots for GPU scaling....

If the mini only goes up to the M2 Pro, you could have a release of the studio with the M2 Max (binned and full), while the new Mac Pro gets the M2 Ultra. Further, the Pro would have double the ports. Case solved.

I love mine, I do photo and video editing. The 2017 MacBook Pro liked to play beachball too much, I’m completely happy with my Mac Studio, really the only problem is a minor bother, the trackpad has to be plugged in. Yes I do use it about 10 hrs a day, but even when it shows charged it misbehaves unless you plug it in. But everything else is fantastic.

If they never refresh it again, that would be TERRIBLE. However, if they update it every 2-3 chip generations, i'm ok with it. I don't think this is the type of computer you update every year.
