Rust, oak galls, and vinegar is an old recipe for a permanent ink. The tannic acid of the oak is part of the chemical reaction. Woods like spruce may not work as well.

vinegar only reacts with iron oxide, so you need that steel wool to rust. add just enough vinegar to get the steel wool wet and let it sit without a lid so as much oxygen as possible can be absorbed from the air. once it's totally rusted you can add more vinegar to dissolve the rust.

You have to rinse the wool in water or vinegar before soaking it or it will take weeks.

So glad I came across this. I have 2 black powder rifle kits to assemble and this would look amazing on the wood stock

How do you determine the ratio of vinegar to steel wool? How would I know how much to mix if I wanted to stain a large deck?

Definitely doing this. Does it only work on oak or all wood types?

I sont understand.
The first sample looks like pine (or a white hardwood) and the second sample looks like American Black walnut.

Does not work very well on pine but works like a charm on white oak.

I mean, just don't tighten the jar lid.

The same thing happens with good leather.

This isn’t real. Your steel wool didn’t react. And that’s not what walnut does, it doesn’t have enough tannins to turn black
