TRANSLATION & MEANING

A lot of people do not understand this song but love it for Sajjads voice and music. However those who speak punjabi know that the most beautiful thing about this song is the poetry / lyrics and what they mean. So here is an attempt from me to translate and explain this song for you guys.

Background :  Sajjad Ali is a famous Pakistani writer/musician/singer. This song is in Punjabi language, Punjab is a province in Pakistan. Ravi (song name) is after the great river Ravi which runs through Eastern Pakistan. Those who have lived in villages know thay the river, streams or tributaries are the center point for social activity. Think community pool, picnic spot, dating spot etc all in one.

This is a song about someone who is far away from home (has built a home away from home) misses the life and loved ones back home and basically would do anything to get back but he cannot due to various reasons. And what better place to shoot the video in than Dubai / UAE where thousands of Pakistanis are working in all walks of life. Who have come there for greener pastures and to support the family back home, but now after many years cannot leave due to dependencie etc. And since he cannot go back he is thinking "je aithon kadi ravi lang jave" what if the river ravi could run through here. And the rest of the song revolves around this prayer to see the ravi ince again and what he would do if that was possible. So he wishes and then he realizes the childishness of his wish, yet wishes again.

I might not be spot on but here is an attempt to translate and explain the song for you.

Je aithon kadi Ravi langh jaave
If only the river ravi could run through here

Hayati Punjabi ban jaave
Life woukd be so beautiful once again.
Note: Punjaabi is a dual meaning word here it means a 'beautiful life' and also is the name of his home town punj aab (5 rivers)

Main bediyan hazaar tod laan
Id break a thousand shackles around me to see the day.

Main paani’cho saah nichod laan
Id literally squeez the air out if the water to see/breathe the day

Je aithon kadi Raavi langh jaave ho…
If only the river ravi could run through here

Je Raavi vich paani koi nai
But there is barely any water in the ravi now
Note: reality hits the dreamer that its never gonna happen so he is consoling himself

Te apni kahani koi nai
And there is no more me and you

Je sang beliya koi nai
And since i have no friend/lover anymore
Note : beliya is a word used for partner in general. It could mean friend and it could mean lover.

Te kise nu sunani koi nai
So i have nothing to tell anyone anyway

Ankhaan ch dariya ghol ke
Oh I'd stir up a river in my eyes (tears of happiness maybe)
Note : once again despite the impossibility of his wish he wishes

Main zakhma di thaa te rod laan
And wash my wounds away with them

Je aithon kadi Raavi langh jaave ho…
If only the river ravi could run through here

Ki kaisi majboori ho gayi
What problem/compulsion did i have

Ke sajna ton doori ho gayi
That i am far away from my love
Note : once again sajan can be used for friend and for lover. So it's a song which can be when you miss your friend, family or lover

Te veleya de naal vagh di
And while running this race with time

Eh jind kadon poori ho gayi
When did my life cime to an end

Beganeya di raah chhod ke
Oh id leave these foolish ways (or the way of the unaware)
Note: this is him wishing now once again

Main apni mahar maud laan
Id change my direction / fix my course
Note: Mahar is like the camels noose which you control him through

Je aithon kadi Raavi langh jaave
If only the river ravi could run through here

Thank you guys. You simply cannot do justice to the beautiful punjabi language through a simple translation but I hope you liked the effort.

This video is a proof that simplicity can never go out of fashion. Just a single shot of a man walking by the river, reminiscing about his homeland. How effortless, how soulful.

I am from Assam, Tinsukia the most eastern part of India... The Brahmaputra river is the lifeline of this valley. It flows from Manas Sarovar, Himalaya through China : like the It conveys the same feelings of livelihood, love stories that has been inherited generations after Political boundaries are so dangerous, we share the same feelings, love you Sajjad Ali Saheb ... ❤️ ❤❤❤❤

This song tells us that you dont need flashy studio or behooda dance sequences to make a song hit. You just need a legendary singer like Sajjad Sir.

Only a punjabi whether Indian Punjabi or Pakistani Punjabi would feel the pain hidden in the lyrics and the singing. Beautiful verses.😢
