Sequential Pro 3 vs. Moog Sub 37: Raw Sounds, Basic Sound Design, No Effects, *No Talking*

Which sounds better to you?? We've got the new Sequential Circuits Pro 3 SE pitted up against the modern-classic Moog Sub 37.

No effects, no talking-- Just the raw uncompressed sounds of these two powerful analog mono-synths. 🔥🔥🔥🔥

We'll flex some filters, burn some oscillators, and compare them side-by-side until my camera dies. (in classic tuna-style)

So which one??

Interesting notes on init patches: Sub37 starts osc 1 at around 50% level, Pro 3 starts are 100% level.

Chapters:
0:00 - Init sounds
0:22 - Filter sweeps
2:15 - OSC 2
2:52 - Pulse waves
3:29 - Filter envelopes
5:39 - Detuning
6:56 - LFO 2
7:14 - Camera dies (Synth guessing game!)

As a bassist that plays some synth bass, this makes me glad I got a Sub 37. Just such warm sounds .

I always appreciate these patch match and comparison videos you put out not to mention all the jams. Much love, from Vancouver BC

I'm still very happy with my choice of the Pro 3 SE, while it has a differnt low end, but still nice, it just has so many other features that expand the gamut of audio creation.

A really, REALLY nice comparison video. 🔥🔥🔥👌🏻
Could have used it a little earlier, but I still stand by my choice of buying the Pro3. Not because of the sound, but it seems to be more versatile (as always, matter of personal preference).

A video like this has been needed for some time. Thank you. I've been wondering about how they compare for the past year. Just going by feature list you'd think the pro 3 would replace the sub37. The standard version even has the same footprint. I finally got one a month ago and I've found that in practice they are each better at different types of sounds so I'm keeping both. There's more to it than the filter, the oscillators, drive, feedback, distortion and type of paraphony are all radically different on the pro 3. It's almost like instead of replacing the sub, Dave Smith designed a companion that would cover the other types of sounds the moog doesn't but threw in a ladder filter so you can kinda get in the ballpark if you don't have one.

For the raw sound i would pick the moog. I've owned the Sub37 but had to sell it becouse it was the only synth i had and i needed more flexibility. But the moog made me fall in love with paraphonic synths. It's just how the oscillators interact with each other that gives these synths such a nice sound, but the sub37 is just something else. Now i have an OB-6, novation Peak, moog matriarch and Arp odyssey, and i'm thinking about selling the Matriarch to get a PRO 3. The Arp oddysey is filling the sub37 gap, and i think for what i want to do, the PRO-3 could give me all the experimental desire i'm searching for with the ability to save presets and alot more modulations than my Matriarch has to offer.

But i like both synths in this video, one is not better then the other imo. Both have it's place.

sold my sub37 6 months ago. guess I will buy another one eventually :P both sound great. I think I prefer the Moog fundamental but the pro3 versatiliy.

Great faceoff! For this style of patch, the short answer is: Moog by a country mile. The long answer? The Moog's BIG fundamental and bubbly, fizzy resonance make it sound so commanding. That said, I definitely hear magic in the high end of the Pro 3 in this demo. I imagine it would be my choice for EDM styles and sparkly, paraphonic pads.

So I just sold my 37 to fund a Pro3 as my only monosynth in an effort to incorporate some less well-trodden sounds into my productions. It'll be my main bass and lead machine. Hoping that wasn't a mistake! Great vid thanks :)

Can't wait to get rid of my Sub37 to get a Pro3. I just hate the interface of the sub37. There's just no subtlety to the controls. LFO as soon as its out of the notch is just too much. I just don't enjoy programming it and the keyboard (on my older one) is horrific. Is they keyboard on the pro3 same as the prophet 6/rev2?

The Moog is stratospheric but the Pro3 is interstellar. Depends on how far out you want take your music and sound design.

Nice video Mr TUNA!!! can u help me please... I just bought the Pro 3, second-hand, at a good price... I don't know if it's what I'm looking for, I haven't tried the Sub 37, I know they are different synths, however which of the two in your opinion can emulate better the sounds of the Mini Moog???
I like 70's prog rock mainly, and when playing live I need a synth that has presets so the Behringer clon is not an option... I don't know whether to sell the Pro 3 and buy a Sub 37 or not...

thank you!

I think that overall, the Sub 37’s raw tone is amazing and maybe better than just the raw organic tone of the Pro-3. The Pro-3 outshines it when adding in the distortion, feedback, and drive. The Pro-3’s sequencer also whoops up on the Sub 37s. I think Sequential’s “ladder filter” on here is missing that juicy Moog quality, while the other two filters on here kick ass and don’t miss anything. The Pro-3 also excels at processing external audio - try using it as a giant guitar pedal and you’ll see what I mean.

The Pro-3 had a smoother character, really liked it
