In this top 5 check out everything from gory brains shown in Spongebob to a Pokemon episode that caused 685 kids to be sent to the hospital.
Whether your 5 or 50, you probably spent some amount of time watching kids shows or cartoons. You can't really avoid it, especially if you have younger relatives. Well there's definitely some truly inappropriate stuff to be found in those tv shows.
SpongeBob SquarePants has long been a favorite among both kids and adults alike, but the show can sometimes feature some very disturbing scenes and messages. From veiled jokes to some outright scary images and scenes. Many SpongeBob episodes have been banned by Nickelodeon for their content. Pretty strange for a kids cartoon that's rated as appropriate for ages 7 and up...
Pokemon has its share of bizarre scenes too, featuring everything from gun violence in the episode "The Legend of Miniryu", to overt sexism in "Beauty and the Beach". There's even one Pokemon episode, "Electric Warrior Porygon"(featured in the video) that caused 685 children to be hospitalized. In the episode Pikachu causes explosions that release crazy flashing red and blue lights. Hundreds of viewers had a violent photosensitive reaction. Symptoms ranged from nausea and vomiting to temporary blindness and even epileptic seizures. The Pokemon animated series was pulled from the air for 4 months following the incident.
The list of scary and completely inappropriate messages in kids shows goes on - Tiny Toon Adventures had 3 of the shows cartoon characters getting drunk, then crashing in a drunk driving accident(featured in the video), and Hey Arnold features the title characters Granddad as a rotting zombie whose jaw falls off(featured in the video).
This all brings us to Courage the Cowardly Dog, a cartoon that basically made its name for being the scariest, creepiest, most surreal show on planet earth. The show was rated as being safe for children 7 and above, but it was really more of a show for adults than kids. Some Courage episodes would truly give anyone nightmares. Courage uses his owners dead bodies as puppets in the episode "The Great Fusilli". He takes on a centuries old ghoul in "King Ramses’ Curse". And maybe most disturbing of all, his owner Muriel almost gets devoured by the zombies of two resurrected ghouls in "Everyone Wants To Direct"! In fact, it would be hard to find an episode of Courage the Cowardly Dog that DOESN'T contain some inappropriate message or REALLY scary scene.
So as you can see, it's pretty amazing that we all got through our early years without having our childhood ruined by crazy kids shows. :)
