“You’re too young to worry.” “That’s what you said about my dad.” That was when I knew exactly what was going on.

When i saw this at the Nitehawk in Brooklyn, absolutely NO ONE spoke when the final scene ended and cut to black. Everyone got up slowly and made their way to the door. As if it was a funeral. It was so personal and engulfing.

Someone pointed this out on Reddit and I can't unsee it but Kim putting ketchup on the fries and eating them first right in front of Marty (who said earlier that he likes to eat fries last because they are his favourites) is her way to really stick it to him, further enhancing the almost offended look Marty has on his face when he sees her. I like thinking about it this way just because it adds some comedic relief after such a dark, twisted and artistically well made traumatic film.

This whole movie glued me to the screen throughout its runtime. That’s how much I enjoyed this movie. One of my favorite psychological thriller/horror movies

the looks they give him in that scene says everything. "You monster!" "You disgust me" "I can't believe we actually trusted you, let alone let you into our home"

The short cuts of the both eating while that orchestral theme is playing in the background has kinda the same vibe as "I'll take a potato chip and eat it!"

Loved it, disturbed me and that finale left me in shock, it reminded me a bit of Funny Games. I didn't thought it was pretentious or anything, it sets the mood for what Yorgos Lanthimos's films usually are (with the exception of The Favourite). It's not for everybody, but i will say that if you wanna give it a shot, do it, cause it's really worth it.

Martin literally spelled out what would happen to their family, yet Steven and Anna did nothing to figure out how he had such a hold over them. Their actions were so ridiculous. Also, Kim literally volunteered to take one for the team? Why not let her? How did they explain Bob’s gunshot wound?

The music really helps make this scene so much better. When I watched the movie, I kept the volume a bit low, and I couldn't hear the music that well. Thought the ending was pretty lame back then. But earlier, I rewatched this scene and the music makes me love it. It seems so epic with this music playing and no audio.

Quick theory I think they went to the diner so he could take the hypnosis off the girl that’s why she eats to test if she can eat again and then they leave right after

My interpretation of the film:
This film is based off of a Greek play where Agamemnon kills Artemis’s sacred deer. So Martin obviously takes the role of Artemis in the film. Stephen takes the role of Agamemnon. For the sake of this interpretation, let’s say Martin represents God, or some god-like being. This is clear in the scene where Ana kisses Martin’s feet. and Stephen represents Mankind. Ana, who in the film is Stephens wife, could represent the desires of man. Throughout the film she splays herself in front of Stephen twice, and offers sexual favors for Matthew. Kim, represents the foolishness of man. She is asked to walk the dog once a day and, to my memory, does not ever obey her fathers wishes. She constantly disobeys her parents throughout the film and even harasses Bob. The only time she shows remorse for any of her actions is when she gets caught trying to run away with Martin. Which lastly leaves Bob to represent either Christ, or the Innocents of man, I haven’t really decided on this one yet. Bob does what he’s asked, and suffers the longest. He also is the only character to bleed from his eyes, which could be symbolic of Christ bleeding in the Garden of Gethsemane. He also died for the sins of Stephen, which as we said is symbolically mankind. So he died for the sins of mankind.
The dialogue is noticeably blank and emotionless for the most part. One thing I noticed is that the Murphy family is the only family who speaks in a monotone voice, Matthew speaks normally and so do the doctors and so does the principal. Until Martin is introduced, who also speaks in a monotone voice. This could be because as he represents god, god speaks to us in languages that we understand. It also adds to the atmosphere of the film, it looks like reality, and feels like reality, but the way they speak is off. It adds an unsettling and creepy tension to the film.
The only thing I can’t figure out is, what’s the deal with the periods?? It’s brought up 3 times in the film. If anyone has any idea what that could mean please help me figure it out!

Would've been hilarious if the entire curse had been lifted if they just killed the dog.

Just speculating; was the little detail of Martin holding his water with two hands to do with the fact that they were tied together for so long when he was being held captive, or am I overthinking things?

yorgos clearly took a note out of tarkovsky's book by using the beginning of the passion of st. john by bach as the final piece of music of the film. amazing movie!

This movie was really interesting, I couldn't take my eyes off the screen the entire time. It's terrifying and I hated every character except for Bob, he didn't deserved that :( ....
