She was a half-blood born to a muggle mother but pretended to be a pure blood witch, using Slytherin’s Locket as proof! Dolores Umbridge caught Mundungus Fletcher when he stole the Slytherin's Locket from 12 Grimmauld Place. In exchange for the locket, Umbridge let Fletcher off without punishment. Later, she claimed she was related to the Selwyns and the locket was a Selwyn family heirloom to enhance her pure-blood credentials. She could be related to the Selwyns though since there was a known Death Eater called Selwyn who fought in several battles for Voldemort, including the Battle of the Seven Potters. He also fought at the Ambush at the Lovegood House.

Her father was a low-level Ministry worker and Umbridge was reportedly embarassed by his presence. After she rose ahead in her career, Umbridge forced her father to retire and sent him away into obscurity. She even erased all his records of having ever worked at the ministry. This was all a part of her strategy to craft a new "Pure-Blood" identity for herself. It is a popular belief that bad things happend to those who tried bringing up Umbridge's past or tried digging her background. Her past was a closely guarded Secret.

Umbridge also had 2 brothers as siblings. She eventually cut them off too from her life.
