So you have this epic animation that you want to copy over to another After Effects project but you don’t know how to do it. Look no further because I will show you how to easily do that, step by step.

First of all, go to the “Project” window, and select the composition you want to copy. Then, go up to the menu, click “File”, go down to “Dependencies” and click “Collect files”.

Now choose “For selected comps” at the top to choose your specific composition, and then click “Collect”. Then, choose a destination and click “Save” and that will create a folder with your composition in it.

Now, open the After Effects project that you want to import it to, click Cmd + I (or Ctrl + I on PC), go into the folder you just created and select your composition (that is saved as an After Effects project file) and then click Open.

A new folder will now be created in your “Project” window and in that folder, you will find your imported composition, but you can also import layers from Adobe Illustrator into your project, and if you want to invest two minutes into learning that, you can just click the video at the End Screen of this video.

With that said, thanks for watching, keep learning, and have a great day!

Really like how you divided this tutorial into sections on the screen, it kind of has everything you get annoyed by on other tutorials fixed. loved it, short and easy. Keep it up

This way you may be duplicating media thats already on the same place, in some cases that can use lots of hard drive memory, you should select the comp you want want use then use reduce project command, then save this project and importing in the next one without duplicating the media involved

Hi. So I did the same steps but after importing the copied animation to the current project I cannot see the animation although all layers show up. How do I solve this issue? Thanks!

Did you animate the "follow mouse cursor" with after effects or is it a windows plugin?

Hey there and thank you for the video. What I want to ask you is if I can do this for a project I have created in after effects 2020 for after effects 2024. So basically I have created some projects in after effects 2020, but I want to download the 2024 version and what I'm asking is if in this way that you explained in the video will work for me, I want to import those projects from after effects 2020 into after effects 2024! Please, tell me if this will work for me!!
Thanks in advance. 🙌🙌

Loved this, thank you! Quick question, how do you do the zoomed in cursor view?

I´m not new to AE but a noob still haha! I have two different projects/files which I wanna copy my sounds to. When I copy, all the effects gets lost. Whats a smart way to work when you wanna make several different movies but use the same graphics, sound and so on.

I do exactly the same what you in the video but when I open the file, there are all of the files from the other project. I select the comp, select the "for selected comps" but somehow I just saved as my main project...

Note that the "collect files" option is greyed out if you're working on a "Team Project". You can convert to a local/normal project via "Edit"->"Team Project"->"Convert Team Project to Project..."

This doesn't work for me. It imports ALL of the comps instead of the one I select. Yes, "only selected..." is selected.
