Tekirdağ, the city of lavender, cherry, grape, warm sea, wonderful beaches.
Everything is at your fingertips to spend a happy and productive time with your family in the center of Tekirdag, with pleasure and safety.
Tekirdağ was called Bisanthe (Βισάνθη) during the Byzantine period and then Rodosto (Ραιδεστός).
Tekirdağ is a province and the twenty-second most populous city in Turkey. The population of Tekirdag is 1,107,491 compared to 2021. It is located on the Thrace side of the Marmara Region; It is surrounded by Istanbul in the east, the Marmara Sea and Çanakkale in the south, Edirne in the west, Kırklareli in the north and the Black Sea in the northeast.
It has been accepted that Tekirdağ was founded as a Greek colony. The city first founded by the colonists from Samos is known as "Bisanthe". The similarity between this name and the word Byzantine is striking. This name was also used when the city came under the rule of the Thracian Odris Kingdom. Those who accept this view argue that the city was renamed "Rhaedestus" during the Roman Empire. However, there are new views that argue that the city of Bisanthe is not in the center of Tekirdağ, but in the town of Barbaros, which is connected to the center.[2][3] The Roman historian Gaius Plinius Secundus, also known as Pliny, talks about the city of Bisanthe and another city called "Resisto" apart from this city.[3][4] In this respect, the name Resisto/Resisthon, not Bisanthe, can be accepted as the first known name of Tekirdağ.
The city, which was previously known as Rhaedestos of Roman origin, is known by the name "Rodosto", which came with this name during the Middle Ages, which coincided with the period of the Eastern Roman Empire. When the Ottomans first took the city, they used the name "Rhodosçuk" derived from this name. But later on, the city was called "Tekfurdagi", and in the first years of the Republic of Turkey, the name of the city was formalized as "Tekirdag" on the occasion of Mount Tekir, located in the southwest of the city.
