In games, I’m a hero meanwhile in real life, I’m avoiding laundry.

Because you matter in games and what you do is important.

In life, nobody could care less

That's why I try to take breaks from videogames, because if you binge play 24/7, it's not fun anymore. I haven't played elden ring in 3 weeks cuz I'm busy with university stuff atm but I know I'll enjoy the hell out of it when I get home this friday

i’ve been re-structuring how i view gaming subconsciously lately. i’ve noticed that the only time it’s truly addicting is after i’ve already started the first game. once i queue in i’ll just auto-requeue for hours because im getting constant satisfaction from the rewards, skins, kills, ranking up etc, but the moment i go back to the lobby to get a snack or whatever i find it really hard to motivate myself to queue back into a match again. the longer i go without playing the harder it feels to motivate myself to ‘play’.
so i’ll spend all day doing things that actually feel good to do, get my work done, clean the house, walk the dog, and at the end of the day - i actually feel good - the lasting effects of taking care of my life.
I realized gaming was a great way to mimic those feelings of accomplishment without actually accomplishing anything tangible or noteworthy. so once i starting using gaming as the “reward” for getting real life shit done, i no longer felt the need for a temporary dopamine fix, and now i only use it as a way to socialize with friends from time to time rather than using it to feel better about myself.

Part of why I try to imagine all of my chores as quests and when I complete one I imagine the xbox achievement sound.
Although, I completely forgot I used to do this. I am definitely reimplementing this.

Well sir, respectfully, my life is literally the same damn thing- working hard to be successful and having nothing to show for it- I look for peace wherever I can find it.

When I’m playing a video game and it’s close towards the end my heart starts beating fast and I even get some adrenaline. Sadly there’s very little in my life that makes me feel that way, especially from the comfort of my own home. So yeah it’s hard to beat

Faster feedback relative to real life's slow, analog "rewarding"

I’ve skipped a console generation and focused my leisure time entirely on learning guitar. Ive always played but the last six years I’ve bust through several plateaus.

But…I have recently stopped caring about it entirely. I have no motivation to play or improve. I’m really thinking about getting a PS5. Events only the last year have shown me how short life is and I don’t think there is anything wrong with chasing joy, as long as you have already taken care of your business that day.

Real life is like endless busywork that leads to nowhere with no reset button or starting a new save.

This doesn't explain hopping on a game, losing, and getting mad every night and doing the same thing the next day XD

Videogames are addicting because there are very well defined rules and effort and skill are always rewarded instantly. In real life, everything is somewhat luck based, reward might not come or mighr come much later. Everything is a bet in real life. That's why vídeo game are more fun.

I fell in love with games 35 years ago, there was no trophies poping up back then, it was simple interesting, stories and so on, like reading a book

You know what playing games on very high competitive level lets me work on competitive level more easily also.

I feel like it unlocks creativity i need+will power, if i just worked i would be depressive and burnt out.

Work hours while being a programmer mean very little in terms of actual progress.

However i am open to an idea of finding something even better so please let me know.

(and now im getting up to do things, have a good day everyone)

I think the reason why they are so effective is because a game rewards your progress at a problem which is exactly the kind of the everyone tells us to do with our day to day life. Making a game of your passion and keeping yourself engaged with what makes you happy is the career everyone strives for, and games offer exactly that.
