I was introduced to Schulze's music in '74 through his 'Blackdance' album, and was instantly hooked. Some decry his minimal and linear approach as 'going nowhere, slowly', but I've always found it meditative and stimulating at the same time. IMO his '70s albums from 'Irrlicht' through 'Live' are essential for anyone curious about early electronic music. With 'Dig It' in 1980 his sound changed (movement away from analog and toward digital synths) and became more varied, but for me at least it was a little hit and miss over the next twenty years. In the final years before his passing though he released a number of records that were more reminiscent of his earlier work. Tangerine Dream's 'Electronic Meditation' is not for the faint of heart, but Schulze's contributions to early Ash Ra Tempel and the Cosmic Jokers albums are very cool.
