Suzanne Valadon - Acrobat to Artist #art #history

Born into poverty, Suzanne Valadon had to work from the age of 11, ending up as a circus acrobat until a back injury switched her into modelling for artists Degas, Toulouse-Lautrec, Renoir and others from whom she learnt the latest techniques and began to develop her own individual style as an artist herself.
She gained acceptance by her peers and was included in prestigious exhibitions, although she was often jostled by truculent crowds struggling to accept that a woman could paint.
Living a bohemian lifestyle, she had a son whose father is not known and a six month affair with composer Erik Satie before marrying a stockbroker. She was then able to paint full time and her work matured. Her female nudes were different from the traditional male fantasy figures, grittier, more honest and she shocked the establishment with her male nudes.
In her forties she left her husband for a younger man, the same age as her son, but they remained together until her death at the age of 72.

Truculent: eager or quick to argue or fight, aggressively defiant. From L. trux, -truc "fierce".

If Jane Austen's Emma was painting Harriet's likeness in the 1810s I don't see why the French public should have any trouble accepting that a woman could paint in the 1900s! Wow people were so backward back then!!

Her painting would be expensive now.
Her female paintings ae more natural and realistic than her male counterparts who idealised females.
She was a very interesting woma in her private life and to come from poverty she would grow up tough and hardy.
A woman of true grit and talent.

There's a lot of male bs here. There were a lot of female artists. The failure of male academia to record this is different from there not being a lot of female artists. Remember, if history doesn't record you, you didn't exist according to men. Be so memorable that men have to report that you existed.
