This is probably the most visual and informative B-17 video on YouTube!

I saw this plane when it came to the Boeing facility near Seattle. It was the first time I was actually see the type of planes my father served in during WW II.🥰

As of 10-2-2019 a sad loss for the Collings Foundation B-17 Nine 0 Nine when on its Wings of Freedom tour the plane took off with 13 aboard 10 passengers 3 crew. as they reported trouble with the #4 engine tried to land at runway 6 at Bradley Int Airport in Windsor Locks Ct. as 7 fatalities were confirmed, 5 passengers survived, one injured in the maintainence facility from one of the engines in the building. as the Collings foundation is cooperating with the FAA, NTSB, FBI, and Homeland Security as this airframe had two prior crashes one in 1987 in Beaver County Pa and in 1995 in Nebraska.

Thank you for this video clip. My great uncle was a ball turet gunner in WWII over europe. He flew in B-17G "Kate's Revenge" I think. His name is Joe Zwick.

According to my dads log missions were flown at an altitude of 24000 feet. He also had a picture showing a short set of steps to get into the nose hatch.

Outstanding knowledge and made for a very informative walk around, we must never ever forget the human sacrifice those young lads gave to make us free from tyrany, this is a flying memorial to them.

4:55 he is so proud of the plane he felt shame for having bugs on it from Oklahoma that havn't been washed off yet.
That's some serious pride.

Pilot's compartment is thermally insulated, right?

I suppose a 109 or 190 attacking from the front was still extremely difficult to hit but at least you could hammer away with the twin .50cals against them

Twenty year old men flew these aircraft even on 2 engines and shot full of holes. Modern pilots seem to have trouble flying these birds even with 4 engines turning.

30, 000 was the service ceiling, so most missions were 20-25, 000. Even so, the accuracy of the Norden was theoretical at best (The Navy passed on the bombsight because it didn't work even in optimal conditions, but the Army gobbled it up.) Far from putting a bomb in a pickle barrel, the Norden was lucky to land a single hit within a square mile of the target. Ironic that that Spaatz, Eaker, and Arnold Army spent so many lives on the idea of strategic bombing on Europe when two years later they flew pressurized B-29s at 5000 feet or less to blanket Japanese cities with incendiary bombs and napalm. The British had already come to that conclusion and torched Hamburg, Essen, Dresden, and other cities by night.

I'm not an aviator but I would have thought the pitch of the prop would have been hydraulic.
