Schistosomiasis | Bilharziasis | Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Lesson on schistosomiasis (bilharziasis): Causes, Symptoms and Treatment. Schistosomiasis is caused by parasitic blood flukes from the genus schistosoma. Schistosoma cercariae penetrate human skin and enter the bloodstream of the infected individual, where the parasites enter the portal vein. Schistosoma parasites also enter the mesenteric and bladder circulations, where they release eggs. Symptoms of schistosomiasis are related to the location of the parasites, the parasite burden and the amount of eggs produced. Systems affected in schistosomiasis include the hepatic, splenic, genitourinary, pulmonary, and nervous systems.

After 15 years of general disability and a host of symptoms, a number of which are related to the medical literature, I learned, with great persistence and a home microscope I modded for increased sensitivity, I found schistosome eggs beneath a small papular urticaria swelling on my mother's scalp. ((I gave it to her with shared baths as well as my entire family.)) 15 years of repeat exposure and general disability is coming to an end. How incredible. The symptoms started after my return from a 6 months trip to Benin Africa where yes, I was exposed to fresh water on a number of occasions without adequate protection. Amazing!

This is what I dont get: not a single time I went to a doctor in U.S. I had a conversation about potential worms in my body. They won't ever do a check up on it. They just brush it off like it's a conspiracy theory

Hey nice video, just as a side note about the treatment, it is important to mention that in acute schistosomiasis syndrome (Katayama fever), praziquantel should only be given after corticosteroids because it can trigger an immune reaction in response to the released schistosome antigens.

We have them in the US I love to fish and have never left the US in 46 years and I got them. One treatment for one day DOES NOT CURE THEM

I have a friend that is very stressed because he had parasites like these in the past. He always worries that they may have come back even when not showing serious symptoms. I guess he doesn't know which species for sure but it's always freaking him out and he doesn't know who to see for help.

I think I have this, from 14 years ago in Iraq. I have no idea how i got it but I've been suffering from uticara anaphylaxia ever since. I've ALWAYS had a sneaking suspicion it's a parasite. However, no doctor or even the VA will take me seriously.
