I'll bet you all anything when guys like DiMeola or any G3 guys play together they're not really worried about outdoing each other or appearing the "best", just having a blast laying down a tight jam. Their fans seem to be the only aspect of them where an excess of ego still exists.

What's interesting to me is it's just about CERTAIN that "Race with the Devil..." was one of Steve Vai's teenage bang-your-head obsessions. Like Van Halen playing Clapton's "Crossroads" solo, Bonamassa dropping into straight-on Eric Johnson offbeat pentatonic strategies, or Steve Morse with his influences albums. So for Vai this is going way deep.
