How this song manages to make me feel both like I’m being cornered by a predator, and like a feral Monster on the hunt I will never understand.

I personally have multiple ways to interpret this song, but my favorite is to think of those folktales about creatures like selkies being captured. there's many different ways these stories go, and many different variations of creatures similar to the selkie (for example, I believe there's an old Nordic fairy/folk tale about swan people?).

(if you don't know, basically selkies are kinda like mythical shaper shifters that are seals, but can turn human when taking off their seal pelt. this does leave them vulnerable, however, because if someone stole their skin they can own the selkie)

but basically it goes something like: the woman selkie's skin being stolen by the man, and she to be married to and enslaved by him, all the while the animalistic instincts in her want nothing more than to tear his throat out and flee home, but he has her skin and she is trapped.

often the relationship is toxic or even abusive. there's still stories were they both try so hard to love one another, but the creature's nature makes it hard to settle. at best, they end with the creature getting their skin (or other binding item) back and fleeing. to the extreme, they'll kill the captor before fleeing, or they die a sad and painful death.

I know it sounds super depressing but I feel like this song perfectly captures how those beings might feel. (also sorry if I explained it all weird and ranted this long, I just think it's neat and kudos to you if you read this far)

She is in dissossiation. Has been for the past year, with random bursts of anger and panic. He tries to understand. He cleans plates off the ground and fixes the walls and tells her it's okay, but it never reaches her ears. He loves her but knows she isn't there. She knows he wants her dead.

The thunder grinds against the doors and makes her skin crawl, and she is getting anxious and nervous, she knows what lies behind the closed doors. It's thundering and he still has to feed their animals. The creature is out there.

She yells at him not to go, but he only hears a whisper. The animals be damned, she hasn't spoken in so long. He stays until he hears the animals. He needs to go. She can't let him, she kisses his eyes and pins him to the ground.

Her legs are weak and can't carry her and he feels this hug was more accident than intentional and he is right, but she keeps her arms folded around him. He hasn't touched her in long, she knows. It will keep him here, where it's safe.

But when they are naked and warm and dining the monster breaks through the window and she throws the plates at it to go away, as he hushes her, as he does not understand. The wind spooked her, but it was actually the monster.

And when he closed the window it was too late, it had gotten him. It was inside his skin, walking, crawling under his face and bones. She screams for him to come back, be good as he has been, and promises to get better, but it's actually just mumbles he can't hear. No, no, not I, not today, he whispers and comes to hold her down but she grabs a piece of the shattered plates and launches towards the monster to get it out of her man's beautiful face, and there is blood, and she is screaming because it was trying to infect her too, trying to walk under her skin, to steal her face.

And he isn't crying this time as he contains her arms and tries to stop the bleeding from her ribcage, because there weren't anymore tears to shed. It was because she was going to die and it was happy, she knew, but he was sad, so sad to see her terrified gaze.

She screams through the whole night, but sleeps soundly as morning arrives. The creature left her skin and her man is safe. His spouse is awake, although injured by her own hands.

For her own sake, he wished her happy dreams when slumber eventually consumed her mind once again. For his happiness, she wished to wake up soon.

I don’t think I’ve ever experienced a song that makes me feel this way. It makes me squeal out loud every time. I was sitting on my bed listening when a storm started and I’ve never felt so powerful. There’s something utterly visceral about it and I am enamoured.

Particular shout out to Madeline’s incredible voice, the line ‘hello my hollow Holofernes’ and Joey’s ‘no not I’ at the end. Feral.

This song makes me feel like someone telling a story of how badly they were treated (like an animal, looked down upon and even beaten) and they become more emotional as they are explaining it.

dear gods this song awakens a feral wildness in my soul. makes me want to run and dance. to scream and howl in rage, joy, madness, freedom, carnal passion. to loose every beast I've muzzled and caged deep in my psyche. simply beautiful.

the fact that it repeats lyrics from Battle Cries (or rather it repeats the lyrics from this song) fucks me up, in a very weird way. No words to describe how these songs make you feel!

There are a lot of possible interpretations for this song. I'm personally hearing a failed attempt at repressing trauma.
"The creature" represents the trauma, it's shut out and ignored, growing more violent and destructive, preventing the singer from focusing on their lover and causing outbursts (it wants me to throw a plate at the wall), until it eventually breaks down the door, tears her apart and causes her to completely destroy her happy life.
