Diamonds have extremely high hardness, but they also have a high tensile strength. However, the material property you are referring to is called toughness, not strength. "Hardened" steels have a high yield strength and ultimate tensile strength vs regular. However due to having lower ductility they do not have a high toughness. That's why many steel tools are case hardened, which means the interior has a higher toughness while the exterior is made (by carburization for example) to be harder.

no, you put seed crystals (which are thin slices of perfect diamond) in the machine, and more carbon atoms get deposited on the surface, but where the new atoms go is determined by the electromagnetism of the seed crystal, so you cannot really control it. No way to have it grow in a specific shape, you put in a seed crystal and it just grows slowly.

I checked with a diamond specialist and the biggest indicator of a synthetic diamond is the amount of flaws and the type of flaws. Natural diamonds are almost never flawless and synthetic diamonds have much smaller flaws of a type that is not generally found in nature. Optically synthetic diamonds often have a colour tinge dependant on the gas used during manufacture but the same colours can be found in natural stones that were exposed to those same chemicals during forming.

i like how he thinks thieves didn't consider selling the diamonds to no so well funded science laboratories :)

The Part about the purity is actually not true the Diamond which is "grown" by PECVD (Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor deposition) can be made purer then naturally found dimond. The process is quite complicated thought because hight purity atmosphere for the PECVD has to be achieved.

Diamonds can be created with CVD which are far superior in quality to natural diamonds and almost free of impurities. For most scientific applications this is not what you want to do. The impurities such as boron and nitrogen can alter the diamonds electrical and optical properties as well as its hardness.

In the automatic captions, it says.

"Here I've got a model for dominance" In place of "Here I've got a model of a diamond"

I remember watching videos previously that explained that lab-made diamonds are much more perfect than natural ones. Natural diamonds have many more imperfections which makes them unique, giving them their consumer value. This seems at odds with what the professor mentions at the end of the video, could you look into this further periodicvideos?

Tungsten is a very resilient metal that resist being deformed, similar to Titanium. I think that to make a hard seal with the diamond, the ring would have to be of a comparable hardness. Any material too soft & deformable wouldn't hold the seal at such high pressures. But that's just my two cents.

Diamond cutting is an art. From what I've seen, at the right pressure, angle, frequency, etc, you can "cut" a diamond into it's many facets. Been yrs since I've seen it done, but that was then.

I saw a Nova Science Now where Neil took vapor deposit diamonds and natural stones to a jeweler. He couldn't tell the difference. The manufacturer of the diamonds said the only real way to tell the difference was that the natural diamond would be the one with imperfections.
also he puts serial numbers on his rocks.

Diamond have ridges, pressure points, where you can place a clever blow, and split them.
Imagine "Minecraft's" Diamond armour. A blow directly from a 90-degree angle will shatter it into four pieces.

w-BN is 58% stronger and diamond is cool (to normal people) because DeBeers spread rumors like diamonds are rare and stuff.

The professor was right about the high market diamond not threatened by symthetics. But the natural diamonds are laced with nitrogen in a specific rhythm not replicated with synthetics. I don't know which one is more pure.

They're only worth a lot because people think they're rare. The diamond companies exploit this by hoarding them and slowly putting them into the market.

Don't the companies keep the supply low on purpose in order to make them more expensive?

Diamonds aren't a single crystal, they all have planes of imperfections called sheer planes. Diamond cutters make use of those weak points to break the diamonds, they don't really "cut" them.

I want to see a video showing a diamond getting melted. I would love to meet this guy
