Spinalonga is a fortress island in eastern Crete, Greece. It was build by the Venetians in order to protect the island of Crete against Ottoman Turks. Later on the island was a prison. In modern times the island had a leper colony. The island of Spinalonga is located in the gulf of Mirabello, opposite of the fishing villages Elunda and Place.
