Something I'd like to note is his intentions in immortality were pure hearted. After his parent's death he found the skin of a white snake and Hiruzen Sarutobi explained the reincarnation of the snake. His original goal was to stay alive long enough to meet the reincarnation of his parents. It's kind of sad how this was twisted by war and such.

For the longest time, up until Orochimaru was sealed away by Itachi, I was almost certain that there was going to be a plot twist coming where it was revealed that Sasuke was actually Orochimaru all along, and that he had succeeded with the body transfer.

Naruto theory: The Orochimaru we're first introduced to is dead/forever sealed away. The new one that Sasuke extracted from Anko is the Rock Lee Ninja Pals version of Orochimaru.
