Smoothing plane? James is certainly a smooth operator. And he's the man to tell the story. That much is plane to see.

As someone who uses old tools it really makes you appreciate the work put into old projects. For example old wooden tackle boxes or tool chests

It's wonderful that the same tool can remain useful for so long, for so many people.

I have a couple of old wooden planes like that. Matched set of tongue and groove groove planes. Cost me half a crown apiece in a 2nd-hand tool shop 60 years ago. How I wish I'd had a few more half crowns - but that was serious money at the time. I got an army surplus steel smoothing plane at the same shop - still in very regular use - I don't think I could match it in quality now from any source.
I've used them a few times - often because they're so often faster to sharpen and set up than so many modern machine tools. Plus - as I look at the names stamped on the sides - there's a world of fascination.

Not really related to woodworking but my old multimeter has some white paint spaletered over it, still works like a champ and is precise. Even though jt looks to be from the 50s 60s

SO COOL... Thank You for sharing your knowledge and awesome stories ... Eastern European... ha!... My mother's brother -in- law was a cabinet maker- in the 20's All was gone due to WW II ... the communist regime controlled the people- //my aunt- an accomplished weaver was relegated to working in the fields...crafts and arts were squelched
Your 'history' story honours these fine folks ...THANK YOU

Geology is the study of pressure and time. That’s all it takes, really. Pressure and time. That and a big goddamn poster.
