How UK-based watchdog Airwars is counting the Gaza death toll • FRANCE 24 English

How can the deaths of Palestinians in Gaza be monitored by outside organisations? Almost 19,000 people have been killed in 10 weeks of war, according to the Hamas-run health authorities. The credibility of those statistics have at times been undermined by sceptical world leaders, including US President Joe Biden. In Perspective, FRANCE 24's Gavin Lee spoke to Emily Tripp from the UK-based transparency watchdog Airwars, which is using open-source data to try to verify the death toll in Gaza. She told us that so far the estimates from the Hamas-run health authorities are consistent with Airwars' own findings.

Every time I hear what happened on October 7 as the worst massacre on the Jews since the holocaust, that’s not in disrepute, what’s happening on Gaza where 20, 000 likely a lot more Palestinians have been killed, mostly women and children is the worst massacre of Palestinians since the nakba in 1948. The proportional difference here today is extreme.

She says that the numbers are consistent with those provided by the Ministry of Health but those numbers do NOT differentiate between civilians and fighters. Israel is rightfully targeting enemy fighters in order to kill them (or at least remove them from battle). So what fraction of those deaths are legitimate military targets, let alone legal collateral damage? She says they are a "civilian harm organization" but a large fraction of those dead were not civilians. For that matter, what are they doing to document the harm done by Hamas both in their initial attack that started this war and in their failed rockets that kill Gazan civilians?
