Показать описание
As Paulus's Second Offensive inside the city of Stalingrad begins, Sergeant Yakov Pavlov seized a four-storey house in the 9th of January Square. Pavlov's House came to symbolize the Battle of Stalingrad and many myths and legends have surfaced as a result. In this documentary, we're going take a look at what really happened, and put Pavlov's House into the context of the Stalingrad Campaign.

ABOUT TIK 📝

History isn’t as boring as some people think, and my goal is to get people talking about it. I also want to dispel the myths and distortions that ruin our perception of the past by asking a simple question - “But is this really the case?”. I have a 2:1 Degree in History and a passion for early 20th Century conflicts (mainly WW2). I’m therefore approaching this like I would an academic essay. Lots of sources, quotes, references and so on. Only the truth will do.

This video is discussing events or concepts that are academic, educational and historical in nature. This video is for informational purposes and was created so we may better understand the past and learn from the mistakes others have made.

You know Chuikov had it rough when getting his HQ bombed and a giant oil fire next door doesnt reach the bar of advancing the almost died counter.

Late September seems like a crucial moment. Paulus went from "yeah the city will fall any day now" to "duuuude where's my army?" in half a week.

I visited Stalingrad (now Volgograd) in 2019. I stayed in the very Hotel where they put the Swastika-Flag on. The whole City is obviously rebuild but the Scars are still visible. I recommend the Museum of the Battle of Stalingrad (although they play along with "Enemy at the Gates" regarding Zaitzevs Rifle which is displayed there.) and Paulus Bunker Museum just down the Street from the "Intourist Hotel". Great Cinematic Introduction and other Stuff like Paulus portable Bathtub.

"missing, presumed dead" was VERY frequent in Stalingrad because 1) there was nowhere to desert to, which is part of why the fighting was so intense. The Soviet forces could not retreat, later neither could the Germans. 2) Units OFTEN got encircled cut off and buildings often got smashed to rubble. So yeah, people turning up alive after all happened fairly frequently. 3) DId i mention fighting in the sewers? it happened too, one more reason people went "missing, presumed dead".

Pavlov's House I think was also represented in Red Orchestra 2. Unlike Call of Duty it wasn't covered in snow, and trees were still covered in leaves.

Small battlegroups worked on both sides. Germans learned very quickly that C&C in street fighting above platoon level was impossible. So it was usually a platoon sized force of mixed infantry (grenadiers/riflemen + pioneers), an AT gun, an infantry gun and the occasional tank/StuG to assault a certain street/building.
Side note: It's still harder for the attacker, since you have to give a lieutenant a map and a radio. A lack of junior officers is not critical to a combat force; a lack of NCOs is ! The juniors are only there to learn to issue orders and then let the NCOs do their work without interference.
In fact, the Germans used the same tactic of closing the no-mans-land on the Western Front when they faced overwhelming Allied Air Forces and artillery. And the Allies learned the same tricks to deal with it. See battles for Caen and Aachen.

Ha yes the Pavlov's House map is infamous for attackers, particularly in red orchestra 2.
That game has one of the best maps concerning Stalingrad, some might even be historically accurate !

It's astonishing that we're at home sitting and drinking our tea, watching this stuff play on a youtube video. But these were real live humans that were bombing and shooting at each other, and killing each other by the thousands everyday. And we animate their fighting positions on a map like it's a video game.

Legends of “Pavlov’s House” or “the Alamo” remind me of my friend Yvonne’s comment about legend’s: “If it isn’t true, it ought to be!”

11:40 fun fact: you go into combat on an empty stomach, if possible. 1) Wounds to the abdomen are much less serious then, really. 2) Being angry can be helpful when literally killing people.
