Because it is just like Northwestern Scotland. The weather just sucks!

There are about 1 and a half million people living in western+ north western coastal counties, ( including derry - not including antrim or cork ), and the population is growing by almost 1.5 % per anum,

It's pretty easy, economics. Britain owned the entirety of the British Isles for hundreds of years, and trade across the Irish Sea was pretty important. Ships heading west left from English and Welsh ports if at all, seldom did they leave from Irish ports. Combine this with a relatively poor quality of tree for wooden construction and a lack of skilled craftsmen to build them gave little incentive for people to move out from major cities like Manchester/Liverpool, Cardiff, Portsmouth, London, York, etc. The eastern population centers were closer to England and the main financial and employment centers, so it was comparatively cheaper to get goods to the east coast rather than the west coast, so by proximity they grew. Its the same reason why the western part of France is not populated, its nowhere close to Paris.

Why? Because they want to live close to GB.

Because of primary trading partners. Most Russian cities are near Europe and most US and Chinese cities are on the coasts.

The Atlantic....it hits the West coast of Ireland hard. Ireland in turn break a lot of that weather from UK. Much like the Northwest of Scotland its not sheltered .
