"The Jerk ... is by turns funny, vulgar and backhandedly clever, never more so than when it aspires to absolute stupidity." – Janet Maslin, The New York Times

Hailed as one of the funniest movies of all time, The Jerk stars Steve Martin as Navin Johnson, the adopted son of a poor black sharecropping family in Mississippi. When he learns that the world is a much bigger place than he'd ever imagined, Navin sets out on a quest to find his "special purpose." His adventures lead him to encounter a would-be assassin, jobs in carnivals and gas stations, a life-saving dog, romance with the girl of his dreams and more money than he could ever spend. But his life in the clouds may come crashing down when the source of his new fame and fortune creates disastrous side effects.

They loved Navin so much like he was their own.

One of the funniest movies of all time. Momma took us to see this in the theater. I remember asking “whats a blow job?” In the middle of the theater. Why did my Mom take us as kids!?? LOL AHHH how I loved THE seventies.

When I first saw this in the theater when it came out, folks were obviously laughing at Steve Martin's line "I'm gonna stay this color?!?!" But I was more struck by the thought that this black family saw NO COLOR and loved him as their own child. That love will never regard race or blood as anything but a footnote, but character makes you a loved family member. Though played for laughs, the notion is itself beautiful. i guess I read too much into it. LOL

This is hilarious. But it also makes me think of the babies of color raised by white families in predominately white communities and makes me sad. Hope they ask have families as supportive as this.
