Catholic Gorge (Φαράγγι Καθολικού) – Crete | Greece [4K]

Catholic Gorge or Katholiko Gorge is one of the most important gorges of Crete with a special religious value since several monks practiced in the caves of the gorge, while inside the gorge there is also the oldest monastery of the island, the Katholikon Monastery. It is located approximately 16 kilometers east of the city of Chania.
The entrance to the gorge is located behind the historic Gouvernetou Monastery at the foot of Mount Skloka in Akrotiri Chania. The route leading to the canyon bed is downhill. After a 10 minutes hike, we come across the cave of Panagia Arkoudiotissa with the ancient sanctuary of Artemis.
In the continuation of the route, the path becomes more difficult and the landscape more wild. After another 10 minutes of walking we come across the abandoned Catholic Monastery with the cave temple of Agios Ioannis the Hermit who lived inside this beautiful cave in the 14th century. The 151 meters long cave is decorated with stalagmites and stalactites. The monastery is built between the two ends of the gorge, which are connected by a beautiful single-arched bridge.
In the 17th century, in front of the cave, an extensive construction of buildings took place under the supervision of Ieremias Tzagarolos and with architectural plans from the works of Sebastiano Serlio, and this is how the monastic complex acquired its current impressive form. You can still see the ruined cells of the ascetics, the bell tower and the impressive bridge that crosses the river of the gorge, creating a large square that joins the two sides. At the foot of the bridge there are large vaulted storage spaces, while on both sides a two-story building and a small wing of vaulted spaces were built for the accommodation of pilgrims.
