Difference between restraining order and no contact order?

While both a restraining order and a no contact order mean that you have to stay away from a specific person, they are a little different.

A restraining order is civil, and it is its own separate case against you where a no contact order is usually pursuant to a criminal charge against you.

So lets say that you have a domestic violence charge, it's a criminal charge, and when you get arrested the judge is going to give you a no contact order. The longest it can last is for the duration of the case and whatever amount of probation you are sentenced to if you end up taking a plea or are found guilty. A restraining order is a separate action altogether. If someone files that restraining order against you and the judge grants it, it can last for as long as the judge decides, and that can even be forever.
