For Backcountry athlete Colter Hinchliffe, ski mountaineering, freeriding, and trad climbing aren’t always separate sports. It turns out the perfect place for him to blend these disciplines is in Rio Negro, Argentina, where he invited fellow Backcountry athlete Nils Mindnich to explore insanely unique climbing routes accessed by ski touring.

Argentina’s jagged peaks and perfectly shaped granite towers make any climber’s imagination run wild. The fact that the best entry to these routes is via ski touring and splitboarding supplies an ideal combination of activities for Colter and Nils. Follow along as they experiment with ski-accessed climbing routes, culminating in their grand objective: La Estella is a mega-exposed spire that is not for the faint of heart.
