On this day in 1945, the atomic bomb “Fat Man” was dropped on Nagasaki, Japan, in completion of one of the most controversial missions in modern warfare history. Justified by its ability to save millions of lives through the halting of guerrilla warfare. Over 30,000 lives were lost on impact, with countless more after from radiation poisoning. On September 2nd, 1945, the Japanese Emperor publicly surrendered, with the Japanese people hearing his voice for the very first time, bringing to a close the Second World War.
