A Day in NAGASAKI 🗾 Kyushu, Japan 2024

Join us on a day trip to Nagasaki in Kyushu, Japan, visiting Chinatown, Dejima Wharf, the Peace Park and Museum and one of Japan's top 3 night views.

There are lots of things to do in Nagasaki, so you can easily spend longer there. However, we went on a day trip from Fukuoka on the Kamome shinkansen. First we walked from the station to Dejima Wharf, which is by the sea with places to try fresh fish rice bowls. From there, we walked through the seaside park to Chinatown, where we just missed the lantern festival by a few days. Much of the city is walkable, but for places that are further off, the tram is a cheap and easy way to get around. We took the tram to the Peace Park and Museum - not an easy visit but a very well-done museum and very thought-provoking. Next we took the tram to the Nagasaki Ropeway, to go up Mount Inasayama and see one of Japan's top 3 night views. We got there just before sunset and waited in the cafe until it got dark to see the stunning view. Finally we had conveyor belt sushi, before taking the train back to Fukuoka.

Thanks for the tips! I have a couple of days in Nagasaki on my next trip - looking forward to the viewpoint (did Hakodate at sunset last year - was stunning as it got darker with the city lights hoping for similar!).

Great video and well timed to put this one up because….. we are all booked to go to Japan for the first time next April!! 3 weeks including a few days in Kyushu at the end of the trip and a visit to Nagasaki. Our trip was inspired in so many ways by your videos and guide book so many thanks for helping us along with that. We are also taking in Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara, Kinosaki, Himeji and Hiroshima/Miyajima. Incredibly excited but still lots of Japlanning to do. 😀

Hi Amy, thanks for video update from Nagasaki. One day I want to travel outside Osaka/Kyoto/Tokyo, which I've visited a few times so far. We may go outside the typical tourist path next year. Nagasaki looks very nice, not too crowdy at all. We're looking forward to our upcoming travel to Tokyo in November. Greetings from Norway 🙂

I went there pre-shinkansen and it was excellent then and it seems to have more to do now. Definitely worth the long trip.

Great video! So many countries to visit so I don't know for sure, but if I ever make it to Japan for a third time, I'm leaning towards exploring the Kyushu region.

Huis ten Bosch is a must visit. Especially in winter they have the largest light show.

I really enjoyed Nagaski when I went in 2022, very pretty city and Dejima was very interesting.

We spent 3 nights in Nagasaki last March and really enjoyed it. Personally, I dont like daytrips, as a find them stressful, and I like to wake up and go to bed in a place I visit. We stayed in the Dormy Inn just opposite from Chinatown, and enjoyed tasty authentic food there, in restaurant without any athmosphere at all. I totally agree with you Amy, that visiting places like the atom bomb museum is really horrible. But I think we must do that, and also share it, in the hope that it will never happen again. For me, what disgusted me most, is the way the USA "justified" to drop an atomic bomb over Nagaski !

P.S. The museum in Hiroshima is even worse in my opinion, and I was in tears there. However, the most horrible place I have visited is S21 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Men, women and children were tortured and killed there by the Khmer Rouge, for no reason. Inhumanity at its worst. I still have nightmares about it.

Amy, you should really be paid by the JNTO! Each of your videos gives me more places to add to my Japan "To Do" list- thank you! 😊

I made my first trip to Japan this year!
I transferred from Haneda to Nagasaki which in retrospect was a good idea as the area is quite relaxed and a more gentle introduction to Japan. As you say, the Peace Park is a must but it is well worth making the time for Gunkanjima Island and of course, the viewpoint.
I then made my way to Tokyo in stages using the Bullet train - the only way to travel!

I recommend the Sieboldhuis Museum as it is off the beaten track and is very interesting about Franz von Siebold's contributions to Japan and information about botany etc . I went there seven years ago. I am going to Nagasaki from Tokyo, next Saturday and will stay two nights. Might go to the A-bomb museum as I didn't go there in 2017. I have been to the Hiroshima peace museum in 2016 though (it was closed in 2019 for earthquake proofing etc). We did quite a lot in 2017, we managed to travel to Huis Ten Bosch to view it from the outside as well but we didn't go in.

Great vid! We're contemplating Kyushu next year (along with South Korea) and will most definitely will be staying in Nagasaki for at least 2 days. Got the Japan bug earlier this year having been to Tokyo, Kamakura, Hakone, Kyoto & Osaka (were meant to have gone to Himeji however typhoons changed the plans - an extra day in Osaka didn't hurt :D)
