My dads favorite place he flew. He was a prewar naval aviator and post war he flew every different mark of the Neptune. He flew the from NAS Kaneohe, NAS Agana, NAS Atlanta reserve squadron as NAS PEN, NAS JAX, NAS Whidbey. Half of his 10k navy hours are in Neptunes. When he flew typhoon hunters VW-5 he flew into a typhoon that recorded the lowest barometric pressure recorded by that 1956 date.

My dad was squadron commander of VP9 in California in the early 60s. I was going through his things after he passed away and came across the pilots handbook for the P2V-4. It was marked RESTRICTED. Guess he should have left it in the glovebox when he got assigned to fly a desk at the Pentagon.

I actually few aboard that RP-1 many times, it was one of many in our squadron, VP-31 . I served there from 66-69. I flew Radio most of the time but got my wings at the Julie/ ECM position. I logged well over 1000 hrs. If the tails says RP on it, I few on it many times. The jets were powerful enough to take off without the recip’s.

Actually, The P2 Neptune was in USN service until 1984. It was gradually replaced by the P3 Orion beginning in 1962. I remember seeing the orange-tailed Neptunes flying out of Whidbey Island NAS throughout the 1960's.

I worked on and flew in the SP-2H A/C out of NAS Dallas on Gulf of Mexico missions form 1970-73. Loved these unique planes. Is the Turtle still displayed at NAS Memphis?

FYI. The active duty P2V7 squadrons transitioned to the P3 beginning 1963. VP19 was one of the first in March 1963, The reserve squadrons continued to fly the P2V7 until they transitioned to P3's in the late 1970's . My last flight in an P2V7 was June 23 1974 before we transitioned to P3's in late 1974 at NAS Pt Magu. By the late 1970's the P2 was essentially out of service with the US Navy except for some special mission variants. Reportedly there are none flying as fire suppressant A/C and only one or two flying with a few air museums such as the Mid Atlantic Air Museum.

Thank you for showing this airplane. My dad -Frank E. Warner flew the P2 Neptune as Lt. Commander copilot for the USNR.
His patrol squadron, VP-661 out of Patuxent River, MD flew many missions, including the Berlin Crisis/Cuban Missile Crisis.

Some old family & Navy photographs- show trips to many locations, including Japan, Rome, & Morrocco.
The Navy photos show the plane numbers as 202 & 204 in the late 50's & 60's era.
A family photo shows him meeting the Sultan of Morrocco.

Flying out of Andrews Air Force Base much later-
his plane was lost with all aboard in a crash in Croom, MD in January 1967.
It has been many years since I have visited his grave in Arlington National Cemetery.

I was a crew member on a P2V-7 with a Test and Develpment squadron located at Key West, Florida. I was there 1960-1961. We were testing new ASW electronics. I was then transferred to Brunswick, Maine with VP-26. There, we flew P-2Vs on track of the Russian fishing fleet. Of course, during the Cold War, the fishing fleet was suspected of snooping into the United States. They were hanging out a couple hundred miles off the Massachusetts coast. Later, we went to Gitmo Cuba where we were keeping track of all the shipping going in and out of Cuba. I was there in July of 1962 which was related to the upcoming Cuban Missle Crisis. I enjoyed my time in the I enjoyed your video. It brought back a lot of memories.

Thanks for presenting the P2V7 (SP2H). I have spent almost 4000 hours in a P2v7 as the patrol plane commander and I assure you it was not always boring. Many varied, memorable and intense missions other than looking for Soviet Boomers.

I flew as a radio operator, and a Julie and Jezebel operator, from 1963 to 1964 in VP-9 at Alameda NAS. We flew in operation Dominic Nuclear testing program at Johnston Is. Atoll. We flew out of Johnston Is. and Barbers Pt. Hawaii. We flew reconnaissance in Alaska, out of Shemya, Adak, and Kodiak. We was at Kodiak when the 64 Earthquake hit Anchorage. It was a mess. We flew home to Alameda the next day, so the sea-bee's could have our barracks. Loved the P2V Neptune. We lost three while I was in VP-9, and all crewmen survived. We converted to the P3V Orion in spring of 64. Patrol's in the P2 could last up to about 17 hours, with Bombay fuel tanks installed. i can still hear the sound of the R3350's engines, that droned on for hour after hour. The jets were only used for take off, and tuned on to idle, when we dropped down to view a target in the ocean. We saw a lot of Russian Trawlers back then, and they were always jamming our radio frequencies. Great plane, and great history.
