Edward Zwick returned to the director's chair for the first time since 1998's The Siege with this sweeping period drama set in 19th-century Japan. After centuries of relying on hired samurai for national defense, the Japanese monarchy has decided to do away with the warriors in favor of a more contemporary military. Tom Cruise stars as Nathan Algren, a veteran of the U.S. Civil War who is hired by the Emperor Meiji to train an army capable of wiping out the samurai. But when Algren is captured by the samurai and taught about their history and way of life, he finds himself conflicted over who he should be fighting alongside. Billy Connelly, Tony Goldwyn, and Ken Watanabe co-star.

This movie is literally beautiful.... One of my favorite of all time. Cruise's best role IMO. The depth, the intimacy the spirituality, and Hans Zimmer outdid himself. The hell with historical accuracy, this movie is perfect.

The reason this is my favorite Tom Cruise movie is because most of the acting is felt instead of spoken.Not many movies seem to focus on this anymore.

What alot of people forget is this isnt the first time this man tested Tom Cruises character. Earlier he almost decapitated him and Tom Cruise didnt even flinch. He tried to break him many times but Tom cruises character is every bit a warrior as him.

I love how this scene shows the difference between the two cultures. The Samurai devote their lives to the perfection of whatever they pursue, and they move with grace and power. However, they accept when they have been bested humbly and with respect. Algren sees defeat as an invitation to try again, coming back harder and faster than before. He blunders and fails constantly, but he doesn’t care about winning. He shows his strength in his willingness to come back for more. It’s a concept unfamiliar and even offensive to his opponent, who lashes out at him in anger.

Algren later on encourages Katsumoto to adopt the same mentality when fighting the Japanese army after having lost so much. Katsumoto in turn teaches Algren throughout the film how to find peace in life and regain his lost honor. The film does a brilliant job of showing both culture learning from each other and eventually working towards a common goal. (Or, Nathan could be running headlong into danger because he’s borderline suicidal at this point. Either works).

The woman who was watching, had her husband killed by Algren, however when she saw how resilient and honourable he was, she at least knew her husband died at the hands of a great warrior. Keeping their family honour intact.

I remember when my grandpa jokingly told me when I was younger that he was the last Samurai and that Tom Cruise’s character was based on him in real life...good times.

I suffered a near fatal heart attack in April 2018 in freezing rain and as I lay on the cold ground with nobody to help me, I had to dig deeper into my body, mind and soul to stand up so as to walk to get help. This scene reminds me of that most difficult day of my life.
Stand up and fight for whatever you love, want and need.

Hiroyuki Sanada at his best, in my opinion. He might've said 20 words the entire movie, yet he was still arguably my favorite character. The evolution from disdain to respect that he shows for Capt. Algren, throughout the film, I thought, was the most valuable piece of character development. I look forward to giving his filmography a deep dive when I get the opportunity.

Although he got his arse kicked, in this moment he earned their respect. A person who does not give up despite facing a superior opponent is a person to be reckoned with. Despite the huge chasm in cultures, they could see he has indomitable spirit and heart. A beautifully moving scene.

Bravo! This scene reflects very well a Japanese proverb about resilience that says 七転び八起き“Nana korobi ya oki” which means “Fall down seven times, get up eight”.

I like the moment when the samurai tries to pull the sword out of Tom´s hand and Tom still have enough strenght to hold it.

God damn Uijo is a beast. I know this scene is meant to paint him as a villain for a time, but it kind of makes me love him. This actor does an incredible job of conveying Uijo's incredible pride yes, but in this moment also his fear. Algren at this point in the movie represents the encroachment of the world into Uijo's village. Every time he gets back up after Uijo beats him down, it seems to scare him more than just annoy him. It's a complex scene with not much said. It really holds up to this day and I just love it.
