Prof. David Harvey speaks about the technological competition between states, and how that connects with capitalist competition in a way Marx never imagined. He references this topic's importance in connection to Ukraine and Russia today.

"To what degree is competition between states somehow rather related, tightly related, to the competition between capitalists?" - David Harvey

Re: "It takes a rich country to maintain a technological advantage." That is certainly the case for the US, which is essentially run by technological firms who get (give themselves) subsidies to augment profits, control trade policy and pay very little if anything in taxes. This, if it suits them, after having moved their operations out of the country.

The problem is the sanctions will do exactly the opposite of what you're saying: they will hurt the russian people, and not the russian oligarch or putin. Sanctions will have no effect on this conflict, and are not going to stop the invasion of ukraine by russia. Once the US cuts itself off the rest of the world, we will see how independent this post-industrial society is.

I wish David Harvey had a somewhat more nuanced stance on Russia/Ukraine issue. Has he forgotten about the regime change operation Maidan?
