How to Get More Technical Skill from your BJJ Rolling Sessions

Today's BJJ rolling video is from a recent class I taught at the gym. We're going through some fundamental stuff related to takedowns in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and then had open rolling.

During the rolls I was looking for some very specific things with my guard passes, my side control defense and my Shotgun Armbar submission.

If you'd like to learn more about the shotgun armbar I have a free series here on youtube:

or you can check out the course I have that deep into the whole idea of side control submissions with a main focus of attacking the arms.

Having focus during your BJJ rolls is important, so I encourage you to give yourself a technical aim the next time you step on the mats.

Thanks for watching the video.

THIS is how you roll! Not every day has to be a competition!

His guard retention skills are pretty good, so the pass at 3:05 stood out to me.

Edit - What stands out to me more now is the continued support for a student, even though life took them somewhere else. Good stuff!

I know you were letting people pass your guard but that body lock pass by #76 was clean 4:31

Thank you! That was awesome! I absolutely love watching the flow, it sparked a flame of motivation in me, and is definitely something i noticed that I need to work on since I’ve been back after a long break, everything‘s coming back so fast all at once, I need to relearn how to flow roll again 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️😆

As an instructor, how much thought goes into balancing working on your own game vs trying to put your students in positions to get better/ things you know they need work on

While I am new to BJJ and I am 73 years old it is apparent that I'm not as flexible as one needs to be to apply many of these techniques. After a year rehabbing a back injury I need to drop 20 lbs and get my general conditioning back.

Wow chewy I see a lot of my own style in the way you roll. Lots of under hooks, even under hooking legs, clinching up the head and going for body locks. =)

“1, 2, 3… *clap*”. Where does this come from and why do Jiu Jitsu academies do it?
