the reason why the last two were 2D instead of 3D was because the guys behind the first two episodes had a much bigger team then the guys who did episodes 3 and 4 who are a small two man team. and it's hard to make decent 3d games and engines with a small two man team, yes it could be done but it would take a long, long time, I'm talking about a few years... 2d games on the other hand is generally much easier and faster to do with a small team(one of the reasons why you see so many 2d indies)

the first song reminds me of Chrono Trigger.

that was a different development group and the story for it ended in the webcomics. 3-4 different story.
